Spanish National Research Council (CSIC)
The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is the largest public research organisation in Spain. CSIC collaborates with national and International universities, public RTD organisations, SMEs, companies and other institutions of a scientific/technological nature. It has a staff of more than 13,500 employees, among these about 3,500 are permanent researchers and more than 4,000 are pre- and post-doctoral researchers. The CSIC has 135 institutes or centres distributed throughout Spain, including 51 Joint Research Units with universities or other research institutions. There is also a delegation in Brussels..
The Biological Research Centre (CIB) is the largest multidisplinary institute within CSIC with excellent infrastructures for research work related to Biomedicine, Genetics and Structural Biology (http://www.cib.csic.es). The CIB is equipped with a large number of specialized scientific services. These include a first-class animal and proteomics facilities and an excellent DNA sequencing facility that operates as a SME and provides state of the art NGS and molecular diagnostics services. Other relevant infrastructures for research work in Biomedicine include a NBS BioFlo-115 bioreactor with a 7.5-liter vessel, several Åkta purification instruments, along with first-class nanocrystallization and liquid handling robots (Honeybee and Tecan Evo).
University Hospital 12 de Octubre. Renal Division
Hospital 12 de Octubre is one of Spanish hospitals with a greatest clinical quality and tradition. Its large volume (more than 1400 beds, more than 7000 workers including all the categories), its high technological level and the excellence of its teaching and investigation activities have placed Hospital 12 de Octubre as a reference Center for many diseases in Spain. The recent creation of the Research Institute Hospital 12 de Octubre (i+12) has allowed a better concentration and organization of the investigation activity of the Center, besides a better link with other Institutes, Universities and active Investigation Centers.
The Renal Division of the Hospital 12 de Octubre is currently a central reference for renal diseases in Spain. From the point of view of medical care, it is important to remark the activities of the Hypertension and Clinical Nephrology units, both representing clear examples of clinical leadership in these diseases. The Renal Division on the other hand, has the responsibility of Transplant Coordination of Hospital 12 de Octubre since its foundation. The Hospital 12 de Octubre is currently the Spanish hospital with the larger activity in organ transplantation, particularly regarding renal transplantation (The Renal Division is leader in Spain regarding the number of kidney transplants along the last years, and almost 40% of kidney transplants performed in the Autonomous Community of Madrid are performed in our Division).
Teaching and investigation are traditional in the Renal Division of Hospital 12 de Octubre, and numerous publications in high impact scientific journals are the best expression of this high quality investigation. The units of Hypertension, Kidney Transplant and Clinical nephrology are the outstanding units of our Division regarding investigation.
University Hospital La PAZ (HULP). Institute for Health Research
The University Hospital La Paz (HULP) is one of the main public hospitals in Spain, located at the Autonomous Community of Madrid. It is a reference center for health care, training and research. Since 2010, research in HULP is managed through the IdiPAZ Institute for Health Research, a consortium with the Autonomous University of Madrid (http://www.idipaz.es). IdiPAZ integrates 48 research teams that focus their activities on six major biomedical areas, and it is placed among the 3 leading institutions of this kind in Spain, the first one in Madrid. Among the IdiPAZ support structures there are joint laboratories for cell culture, sequencing, immunochemistry, molecular biology and flow citometry, as well as animal facilities and a Biobank.
Complutense University School of Medicine
